Akira Ikeda is a Gaia sound artist who plays water, listens to plants, and builds his own instruments from scratch. Born in Kyoto, he began with the taiko drum as a child, found the djembe while busking in Spain, and has spent the decades since developing a practice that now spans over thirty countries. At its centre is the Hadouram, a water percussion instrument of his own invention, constructed from steel, plastic, and glass, which makes the vibration of sound visible in real time through the surface of the water. Each one is hand-built and played only by Ikeda himself.
