Shihoko Fukumoto
Shihoko Fukumoto is one of Japan's foremost contemporary textile artists and a pioneer in the modern application of traditional indigo dyeing (aizome). For more than four decades her work has bridged fine art and traditional Japanese craft (kogei), converting cloth into a contemplative, architectural medium. Working with natural fibres including century-old wisteria cloth and extinct weaves, she dyes them in gradations of deep blue that evoke ocean, sky, and light. At Chapters: Kyoto, she installs a complete tea room: four fabric walls and a translucent ceiling, built entirely from her cloth.
